Abstract

Chronic kidney failure (CKF) is a condition in which the kidneys do not function properly. Patients with CKF require hemodialysis therapy as a substitute for kidney function to help remove metabolic waste and excess fluid from the body. The process and mechanism of hemodialysis can cause several complications, one of which is edema in the lower extremities. Edema is defined as the accumulation of excess fluid between or within body cavities. Objective: This case study aims to analyze nursing care with the application of Ankle Pump Exercise and 30-Degree Leg Elevation on the Reduction of Leg Edema in Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis. Method: The method used was a case study with the application of ankle pump exercise and 30-degree leg elevation. The procedure was performed during the intradialysis session for 7 minutes in 3 sessions. The degree of edema was measured before and after the intervention using a pitting edema observation sheet. Results: The results showed a reduction in edema in both the primary and secondary patients. Recommendations: Ankle pump exercise and 30-degree leg elevation can be used to reduce edema in CKD patients and are recommended to be performed routinely. Nurses are expected to incorporate this intervention into nursing care and provide education to patients and families so that they can perform this therapy independently at home.
