Abstract
Childbirth is defined as the delivery of the products of conception (the fetus and placenta) upon reaching full-term gestation (37 to 42 weeks) or when capable of extrauterine survival. This process is executed through the normal vaginal route or via alternative methods, with or without intervention. Labor pain and maternal anxiety are reported complaints experienced by women approaching parturition, particularly among nulliparous (primiparous) individuals. Shiatsu massage represents a non-pharmacological intervention employed to mitigate the intensity of labor pain and the level of anxiety in primiparous women during the first stage of labor. This technique specifically involves applying finger pressure to designated acupressure points: BL31-BL34 during the latent phase, the LI-4 point during the active phase, and the KI-1, PC-6, & PC-8 points during the transition phase. The objective of this final scientific paper is to analyze the outcomes of implementing the evidence-based nursing therapy, Shiatsu massage, in primiparous women experiencing peripartum pain and anxiety. The study encompassed two patients: the managed case, G1P0A0H40 weeks, presenting with a pain score of NRS 6, and the comparative case, G1P0A0H40 weeks, presenting with a pain score of NRS 5. Following the Shiatsu massage intervention across the three phases of the first stage of labor, a noticeable reduction in both pain intensity and anxiety levels was observed. The results indicated that both patients achieved a decrease in their pain scores to NRS 4. Both patients also demonstrated a reduction in their reported anxiety levels. In conclusion, Shiatsu massage is deemed effective in decreasing the intensity of labor pain and reducing anxiety levels in primiparous women. This therapy is therefore recommended as an alternative strategy for pain and anxiety management during the preparatory phase of delivery.
