Abstract
This study aims to analyze the construction of masculinity in male characters in the popular series Gadis Kretek (2023) from various semiotic modes, both visual modes—in the form of appearance, gesture, camera angle—and audio modes—in the form of dialogue and background music. There are three male characters selected in this study by considering their relationship and interaction with the main female character in the series, Jeng Yah, namely: Soeraja, Senoaji, and Idroes Moeria. Data were collected through observation and documentation methods in nine selected scenes from the series Gadis Kretek (2023). The research method used in this study is multimodal discourse analysis by Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen. Data analysis was carried out in three stages, namely identification of semiotic modes, coherence analysis, and knowledge production. The results of the study indicate that the masculinity constructed in the series Gadis Kretek (2023) is a supportive, reflective, and protective masculinity. This form of masculinity is the antithesis of hegemonic and dominant masculinity, and a development of previously existing concepts of new masculinity.
