Abstract

This study aims to explore how audiences with fatherless backgrounds interpret the messages conveyed through the music and lyrics of Nina by .Feast, as well as to identify the factors that shape variations in their interpretations. The analysis refers to Stuart Hall’s reception theory, which categorizes audience readings into dominant, negotiated, and oppositional positions. Using a descriptive qualitative method within a constructivist paradigm, data were collected through in-depth interviews with six participants who came from diverse personal histories and familial experiences. The findings reveal that four participants occupy the dominant hegemonic reading position, one participant demonstrates a negotiated reading, and one participant expresses an oppositional reading. These interpretive differences are influenced by emotional experiences, levels of closeness with the father figure, family conditions, and how each individual relates to the themes of loss and hope represented in the song. Overall, Nina is perceived by the participants as an emotional medium that evokes personal reflection, recalls past experiences, and provides a space for varied interpretations shaped by the listeners’ backgrounds.
