Abstract
Background: Older adults are a group that is vulnerable to mental health problems, especially depression, due to physical, psychological, and social changes that occur progressively with age. This condition also has the potential to be experienced by the elderly at the Budi Mulia 3 Social Welfare Home. Purpose: This study aims to describe the level of depression among elderly people living in social institutions and the characteristics that influence it. Design: This study used a quantitative descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach. The research subjects consisted of 82 elderly people selected using total sampling technique. Data collection was carried out using the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) instrument. The data were analyzed univariately and presented in the form of frequency distribution and percentages. Results: The results showed that most respondents were in the normal category, totaling 51 people (63%). Respondents with mild depression numbered 18 people (22.2%), moderate depression 7 people (8.6%), and severe depression 5 people (6.2%). Depression levels varied based on the sociodemographic characteristics of the respondents. Conclusion: The majority of elderly people at the Budi Mulia 3 Social Welfare Home were in the normal depression category, but mild to severe depression was still found.
