Abstract

Objective: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the main causes of disability in the elderly population. In moderate to severe cases, knee arthroplasty is the definitive treatment to reduce pain and improve function. However, postoperative outcomes often vary, partly due to obesity, which can increase mechanical stress and systemic inflammation. This study aims to determine the effect of obesity on the functional outcomes of patients after knee arthroplasty. Methods: A retrospective cohort study design using medical records data from Fatmawati General Hospital. Results: Most patients after knee arthroplasty were classified as obese (56,7%). Functional outcome assessment using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and joint range of motion (ROM) showed variation between subjects. However, no statistically significant differences were found in VAS score or ROM between obese and non-obese patients, either in bivariate or multivariate analysis after controlling for age and blood pressure. Conclusion: Obesity was not significantly associated with functional outcomes measured using VAS and ROM in patients after knee arthroplasty. After controlling for age and blood pressure, obesity still did not show a significant effect on postoperative functional outcomes.
