Abstract

Objective: The transition to higher education, characterized by high academic demands, may contribute to the emergence of academic procrastination behaviors. This tendency is closely related to individual psychological characteristics, namely perfectionism and fear of failure. This study aims to examine the relationship between perfectionism and fear of failure with academic procrastination among first-year medical students of the 2025 cohort at the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta. Method: This research adopted an observational cross-sectional framework, in which participants were randomly selecter. Levels of perfectionism, fear of failure, and academic procrastination were measured using standardized psychological instruments including the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, Performance Appraisal Inventory, and Academic Procrastination Scale-Short Form. The participants were 69 first-year medical students from the 2025 cohort enrolled at the Faculty of Meicine, Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta. Result: Chi-square analysis showed that percfectionism was significantly associated with academic procrastination (p = 0.012; OR = 11.714; 95% CI = 1.322-103.769), fear of failure was found to be significantly related to academic procrastination (p = 0.014; OR = 4.550; 95% CI = 1.061-19.513). However, multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that none of the independent variables were significantly associated with academic procrastination (p > 0,05) Conclusion: The findings indicate that perfectionism and fear of failure each have a relationship with academic prcrastination when examined separately. However, they do not have a significant affect when analyzed simultaneously.
