Abstract
Coffee is one of the leading commodities from Indonesia’s plantation sector. Indonesian coffee has high export potential due to its diverse varieties, potentially boosting Indonesia's economic income. However, as a leading global coffee producer, the value and volume of Indonesian coffee exports remain low due to several challenges, such as import regulations and competitiveness with other countries. Given the high public consumption and demand for coffee in Japan, Indonesia has a significant opportunity to increase the value and volume of coffee exports to Japan. This study aims to discuss the management of Indonesian coffee exports to Japan using the economic diplomacy concept and international trade. This research employed descriptive qualitative methods, utilizing primary and secondary data sources, and data collection techniques through semi-structured interviews, as well as data from relevant documents and literature, both printed and online. This study demonstrates Indonesia's efforts to increase coffee exports to Japan through various economic diplomacy activities and synergy with related parties. Economic diplomacy was implemented in response to several obstacles faced by Indonesian coffee exports to Japan from 2017 to 2021. These efforts maximized the potential of Indonesian coffee and identified opportunities in the Japanese market, resulting in a gradual increase in the value and volume of Indonesian coffee exports from 2017 to 2021. These efforts were implemented through bilateral meetings, the Specialty Coffee Association of Japan, the Trade Expo Indonesia, Coffee with the Ambassador, and other initiatives by the government and the private sector. Through these efforts, the value and volume of Indonesian coffee exports to Japan experienced a significant increase in the following year.
