Abstract

Instagram, with 84.6% of Indonesians using it, is one of the social media platforms frequently used for social interaction. The phenomenon of multiple account ownership is often found on Instagram, with most users being Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2012. Generation Z can have more than one account on Instagram, each with different functions, purposes, and forms of interaction. This creates a role-playing environment that occurs on each 'stage' or account. This study aims to analyze how dramaturgical practices in the social interactions of Generation Z students' Instagram accounts using Erving Goffman's dramaturgical theory. This study uses qualitative methods and a phenomenological approach to deeply understand the phenomenon being studied. The results show the existence of dramaturgical practices in the social interactions of Generation Z students' Instagram accounts. The first account acts as a front stage, where users display their best side, maintain a positive image, and shape the personal branding they want to be seen by the public. Meanwhile, the second account acts as a back stage, providing a more private and personal space for users to express themselves without social pressure. Generation Z students consciously separate public and private spaces on social media, and consciously practice dramaturgy to adjust the roles they play based on the context and audience of each account they own.
