Abstract
Low birth weight infants (LBWIs) are at high risk for various complications, including difficulties in sucking and swallowing. One non-pharmacological intervention that can be used to improve oral function and promote weight gain is oral motor massage. This intervention can help enhance the infant’s ability to feed independently, accelerate weight gain, and reduce the length of stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of nursing care involving oral motor massage in improving oral feeding ability in LBW infants in the NICU of RSPAD Gatot Subroto. The method used in this study is a case study approach involving two LBW infants who were treated in the NICU. The intervention consisted of oral motor massage performed over three consecutive days, 2–3 times per day for 5–10 minutes per session. Data were collected through direct observation, documentation, and hands-on implementation with both infants. Evaluation was conducted based on weight gain. The results showed that after routine oral motor massage intervention, there was a weight gain of 50–100 grams over the three-day period. The duration of hospitalization also tended to be shorter compared to LBW infants who did not receive the same intervention. In conclusion, nursing care involving oral motor massage has proven to be effective in improving oral feeding ability and supporting weight gain in low birth weight infants in the NICU. This intervention can be incorporated into standard nursing practices in neonatal intensive care settings.
