Abstract

The phenomenon that occurs in the high school environment shows the application of rewards and punishments that can play a role in providing pleasure or misery for students in establishing relationships with their teachers. The purpose of this study was to analyze the role of rewards and punishments of teachers at SMA X in Cibubur in the involvement of interpersonal relationships and interpersonal communication with their students based on the theory of social exchange (rewards, sacrifices, and final results). This research method uses descriptive qualitative with Martin Heidegger's phenomenological study approach and the constructivism paradigm. Data collection was carried out with structured and unstructured in-depth interviews (1 key informant and 5 supporting informants). The data analysis stage includes data transcription, data reduction, coding, data presentation with source triangulation. The results show that teachers implement rewards and punishments based on the "SMA X Education Guidelines Book 2023-2024". Rewards at SMA X in Cibubur are a system in the form of verbal communication and in the form of goods. Students show positive natural reactions such as happiness and enthusiasm when receiving rewards given by their teachers. The interpersonal relationship between students and teachers at SMA X can be maintained and developed for the better in the implementation of rewards between teachers and students. Punishment at SMA X in Cibubur is a system in the form of verbal and nonverbal communication. Students show negative natural reactions such as annoyance and disappointment when receiving punishment. The interpersonal relationship between students and teachers at SMA X creates a wall or distance on both sides and students become uncomfortable when meeting teachers. The application of rewards and punishments creates a pattern that is interconnected in the elements in it that can play a role in damaging or improving interpersonal relationships between teachers and students.
