Abstract

This research explores how female masculinity is represented in the Korean drama series "Queenmaker" using Peter Lehmann's concept of female masculinity. The method employed is John Fiske's semiotics, analyzing three levels: reality, representation, and ideology. This study uses a qualitative approach, a constructivist paradigm, and John Fiske's semiotic analysis method, which includes television codes to identify scenes that contain Peter Lehmann's concept of Female Masculinity, supported by journals and articles reviewed by the researcher. The results of this study indicate that the eleven scenes selected from the Korean drama series "Queenmaker" by the researcher have meaning and significance, representing female masculinity in the lives of Hwang Do Hee and Oh Kyung Sook according to the ideology of masculinity by Deborah David and Robert Brannon, and Peter Lehmann's concept of female masculinity. This is reflected in John Fiske's three levels of semiotics: reality, representation, and ideology. All the scenes portray reality, with the characters Oh Kyung Sook and Hwang Do Hee presenting a masculine appearance, wearing dark-colored clothing, and engaging in conversations emphasizing their power to influence, dominate, assist, and lead. The representational meaning strongly depicts Oh Kyung Sook and Hwang Do Hee as brave characters capable of showing superiority and willing to sacrifice for the greater good. The ideological meaning reflected in all the scenes aligns with Deborah David and Robert Brannon's masculinity ideology: "Be a Big Wheel," "Give Em Hell," "Be a Sturdy Oak," and "Give Em Hell."
