Abstract
Music and music videos are a medium for conveying essages. (G)I-DLE, a girl group from South Korea, performs a song themed around tomboyish women. Tomboy women emerge as a result of a culture constructed into a gender that generates views of deviant behavior from the primary gender culture. This tomboy theme is relevant to examine due to the phenomenon of tomboyish women's behavior still being unacceptable in certain cultures. This research aims to understand the representation of tomboyish women in the music video (G)I-DLE’s “TOMBOY” based on denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with a constructivist paradigm and Roland Barthes' semiotic method. The concept used is the characteristics found in tomboy identity. The results of this study confirm that the music video “TOMBOY” by (G)I-DLE contains representations of characteristics found in the identity of tomboy women. Tomboy women still often face negative perceptions from society. The storyline of the music video depicts tomboyish women who remain confident in themselves to be accepted by society while embracing their tomboy identity. The interpretation of this music video shows that the characteristics of tomboy identity serve as a shield for women.
