Abstract
The relationship between a mother and her daughter is a very complex relationship. Daughters grow up with their mother's emotions, so they often find themselves in conflict and have a love-hate relationship. This study aims to discuss the communication styles between mothers and daughters. Phenomenology and Family communication patterns are other basic concepts that underlie this research. Communication patterns that are formed in a family depend on how parents communicate with their children on a daily basis. This type of research uses qualitative descriptive methods with in-depth interviews. Data analysis is carried out using the concept of communication styles consisting of passive, aggressive, and assertive, as well as the relationship maintenance theory which has five dimensions, namely positivity, openness, assurances, sharing tasks, and social networks. The results of this study show that the communication styles applied by mothers and daughters vary between assertive, where both parties discuss and understand each other. Assertive-aggressive communication patterns combine the two styles, where mothers and daughters may have difficulty controlling their emotions, but they still discuss specific issues. Passive communication occurs in mothers and daughters who have a poor emotional bond, where they usually only communicate what is necessary and rarely communicate. The relationship maintenance efforts that are commonly applied are positivity, where both mother and daughter try to interact in a more enjoyable manner. Openness, where the mother and daughter listen and understand each other. Assurances, where both parties provide support or comfort if the other party is experiencing problems.
