Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused people to carry out many of their activities online resulting in the rise of social media use globally. The surging use of social media could result in increasing the risk of developing mental emotional disorders such as anxiety. During the COVID-19 pandemic, learning is also carried out online, which can add to stressors already faced by medical students. This study was conducted to determine the influence of social media use on anxiety levels in medical students. This study used a cross-sectional research design conducted on 86 medical students of Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jakarta using SONTUS and HARS questionnaires. The results showed that 48,8% of participants were in the moderate category of social media use. As many as 23,3% of participants experienced mild anxiety, 10,5% experienced moderate anxiety, 8,1% experienced severe anxiety and 1,2% experienced very severe anxiety. Based on Chi-square test, there was no impact of social media use on anxiety levels with p value of 0.072. In conclusion, social media use does not influence anxiety levels. Respondents are advised to limit the time spent accessing social media. Educational institutions are also expected to provide education on how to reduce anxiety levels.
