Abstract

This research focuses on issues arising from the use of emojis, such as ambiguity, slang, and seriousness. Ambiguous emojis and inconsistent slang can cause confusion and misunderstandings, especially for recipients who are not familiar with these terms. The use of emojis in formal contexts can also diminish the credibility of the message. The aim of this research is to investigate the impact of using LINE stickers on the interpersonal communication competence of UPNVJ students from the class of 2020, using Media Richness Theory (ability to handle ambiguity, ability to send multiple cues, ability to provide feedback, ability to personalize the message). This is an explanatory quantitative study employing survey and questionnaire methods, with accidental sampling. The data were analyzed using SPSS with simple linear regression. The results indicate a Pearson’s correlation value of 0.925, indicating a significant influence between nonverbal communication through LINE stickers and the interpersonal communication competence of the students. In conclusion, LINE stickers can enhance the interpersonal communication competence of students.
