Abstract

Overweight children show low activity. Children’s low motor abilities are impacted by inactivity. Children who have a high body mass index make children lazy to move and has a bad impact on the child's physical condition and affects gross motor skills. This study aims to determine the relationship between body mass index and gross motor in children. The research location was conducted at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri 12 Jakarta. The time taken was in April. The population that became the object of the study was 96 people. The sample taken in this study based on inclusion and exclusion criteria and calculated used the Slovin formula calculation plus 10%, which obtained 85 people. The authors used a correlation research method with a cross-sectional approach. Data collection used the calculation of Body Mass Index (BMI) and Test Gross Motor Development edition 2 (TGMD-2) to measure gross motor skills in children. The results were analyzed using univariate analysis, normality test, and bivariate analysis. Data processing techniques use the SPSS version 25.0 application. The result showed that the characteristics of the subject in this study were female with a percentage of 51,8% and male with a percentage of 48,9%, sample aged 9-10 years with indoor/outdoor activities in the form of extracurricular activities such as futsal, taekwondo, silat, tahfidz, Arabic, English, did not participate in activities with the highest percentage is outdoor activities of 48,2%. The result of the normality test with Kolmogorov Smirnov in this study obtained the p-value for the body mass index variable is p = 0,200 and p-value of gross motor skill is p = 0.000, in this study data distribution was not normal. The correlation test using Spearman obtained a p-value = 0.220 with a correlation coefficient of -0.135. This study conclusion there is no significant relationship between body mass index and gross motor skills in children at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Negeri 12 Jakarta.
