Abstract
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is one of a disease with high morbidity and mortality rates in the world. In 2019, the number of deaths caused by DM and its complications reach 4.2 million people. Stem cell therapy shows significant therapeutic potential in diabetic patients, due to its ability to differentiate into Insulin Producing Cells (IPCs) and acts as an immunomodulator. In this era, research on mesenchymal stem cells and hematopoietic stem cells has been widely studied, that a comprehensive discussion based on previous research is very important to add references related to stem cell therapy for the treatment in type-1 diabetes. Methods: Systematic Review by conducting literature searches using PubMed, Cochrane and ClinicalTrials.gov. The literature based on clinical trials in type-1 DM patients using experimental and observational research designs. Results: Based on 9 studies of HSCs transplantation in 212 patient samples and 7 studies of MSCs transplantation in 127 samples, they showed similar results with 100% success rate of pancreatic β cell repair. Both were assessed by the increase in serum C-peptide, decreased level of HbA1c and decreased of daily insulin requirements. Conclusion: MSCs and HSCs have immunomodulatory characteristic and capability to replace the damage of β cells pancreas, that can produce functional insulin for treatment in type-1 diabetes.
