Abstract

This study is motivated by the change in the political stance of PKS, which initially supported Anies Baswedan as a prospective candidate for Governor of Jakarta in the 2024 Regional Election but later withdrew its support and joined KIM Plus. This phenomenon reflects political ambivalence, characterized by the tension between ideological commitment and pragmatic political interests in party decision-making. This study aims to analyze the forms of PKS's political ambivalence, the factors underlying it, and its impacts on the party. A qualitative method with a case study approach was employed through interviews, documentation, and literature review. The analysis was conducted using Guno Tri Tjahjoko's concept of Political Ambivalence, along with the political party theories of Angelo Panebianco and Giovanni Sartori. The findings reveal four forms of political ambivalence: ideological proximity versus electoral calculation, grassroots aspirations versus elite decision-making, identity politics versus coalition pragmatism, and local interests versus the national political configuration. These forms were influenced by electoral considerations, coalition dynamics, elite interests, and national political pressures, resulting in weakened ideological consistency, disappointment among part of the voter base, and a stronger strategic position for PKS within the coalition. This study contributes to the development of the Political Ambivalence concept by demonstrating that ambivalence occurs not only at the elite level but also as an organizational adaptation strategy to maintain party survival amid political dynamics.
