Abstract
Depression is associated with oxidative imbalance that may increase neuronal susceptibility to oxidative damage. This study aimed to analyze the effect of coriander seed extract on MDA and GSH concentrations in the brain of depressed rat models. This experimental study used Wistar rats induced with chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS). The animals received coriander seed extract at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight. Depressive like behavior was evaluated using the Forced Swim Test while oxidative status was assessed through MDA and GSH concentrations in brain tissue. The results showed differences in MDA concentrations among the five experimental groups (p = 0.0005). The 100 mg/kg body weight group showed a lower mean MDA concentration than the 200 mg/kg body weight group. GSH concentrations also differed among the groups (p = 0.0122). The 100 mg/kg body weight group showed the highest median GSH concentration at 5.142 while the negative control group showed the lowest concentration at 2.244. The FST showed no difference in immobility time among the groups (p = 0.57). Coriander seed extract showed potential antioxidant activity by reducing MDA concentrations and increasing GSH concentrations in the brain of depressed rat models. The 100 mg/kg body weight dose showed the most favorable descriptive profile among the treatment groups.
