Abstract
This study aims to examine the influence of privacy needs on self-disclosure behavior among second account Instagram users within the student population of FISIP UPN "Veteran" Jakarta, class of 2022–2023. It is grounded in Communication Privacy Management (CPM) theory by Sandra Petronio, which explains that individuals view themselves as owners of their personal information and therefore have the right to establish privacy rules regulating who is permitted to access that information through boundary management. This study employed a quantitative approach using a survey method and purposive sampling technique. The population was estimated at approximately 1,640 students from the 2022 and 2023 cohorts, as the exact number of students who own and actively use a second Instagram account could not be determined, with a sample of 100 respondents. Data were analyzed using simple linear regression with the bootstrap method via IBM SPSS version 27. Results indicate that privacy needs significantly influence self-disclosure behavior, with a significance value of 0.001 < 0.05, contributing 35.8% (R² = 0.358). Hypothesis testing shows that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted, indicating a significant influence of privacy needs on self-disclosure among second account Instagram users. These findings demonstrate that the need for privacy is not a barrier to self-disclosure; rather, it drives students to create a more selective and secure communication space through their second account.
