Abstract
This study is motivated by the rapid development of China's electric vehicle industry, which has encouraged domestic companies, including BYD Auto, to expand their industrial activities into international markets. In this context, Indonesia has emerged as one of the strategic destinations for expansion due to its large market size, significant potential for electric vehicle growth, and supportive policies for the development of the electric vehicle industry. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the role of China's economic diplomacy in promoting BYD Auto's industrial expansion into Indonesia during the period of 2020–2024. This research employs the concept of economic diplomacy proposed by Bayne and Woolcock, Rana, and Muniz as the primary analytical framework, while the concept of industrial expansion serves as a supporting theoretical perspective. This study adopts a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through library research and interviews. The findings reveal that China's economic diplomacy supported BYD Auto's expansion into Indonesia through three main instruments: trade activities, investment promotion, and technological and industrial cooperation. Trade served as the initial stage in establishing market presence, investment promotion encouraged the development of local manufacturing facilities, while technological and industrial cooperation strengthened BYD's integration into Indonesia's electric vehicle ecosystem. This study concludes that China's economic diplomacy played a significant role in creating favorable conditions for BYD's industrial expansion into Indonesia through trade, investment, and deeper industrial integration.
