Abstract
This study examines the representation of resistance to conservative education in Peter Weir's Film called Dead Poets Society (1989), using Roland Barthes' semiotic analysis across three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth William F. O'Neill's typology of conservative education and James C. Scott's theory of public and hidden transcripts support the reading of obedience and defiance among the characters at Welton Academy, a fictional boarding school. The research applies a qualitative descriptive method, with seven selected scenes as the unit of analysis. At the denotative level, the findings point to a rigid, pressure-filled boarding school setting. The connotative meaning reveals a shift among the students from blind obedience toward independent thought, expressed both quietly and openly before school authorities. At the mythical level, the film strips away the belief that discipline and tradition are the only path to success, replacing it with the principle of carpe diem as a more humanist model of education. These findings show how film can critique education systems that limit students' freedom of thought.
