Abstract

Challenges faced by media in adapting to changing news consumption patterns, the attention economy, and increasing journalistic workloads encouraged the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as an efficient solution. This study examines the integration of AI into the journalistic workflow at Kompas.com. Using a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach and a constructivist paradigm, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with the Assistant Managing Editor, Editor, and Reporter of Kompas.com, supported by observation and documentation. Findings reveal that AI functions as a collaborative tool rather than a substitute for journalists. Based on the concept of journalistic routines, AI is utilized to generate ideas and reduce technical workloads. However, human involvement remains essential in research, fact-checking, and writing due to AI’s limitations in intuition and empathy. From the perspective of the Technology Acceptance Model and Hierarchy of Influences, AI adoption is driven by its perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use, and the interaction of factors that foster a positive-critical acceptance pattern. Kompas.com consistently implemented Press Council guidelines through AI usage boundaries and rigorous verification procedures. The study concludes that AI can be successfully adopted without compromising journalistic credibility when humans remain the authority over accuracy, context, and ethics.
