Abstract

Nickel mining in Indonesia not only raises ecological and social issues but also gives rise to contested discourse in the public sphere, particularly in media coverage. Amidst the dominance of the state and national media that frame nickel downstreaming as an agenda for national development, economic growth, and energy transition, environmental media present alternative perspectives that emphasize ecological damage, threats to indigenous communities, and unequal power relations. This study aims to analyze how environmental media, namely Mongabay.co.id and Greeners.co, construct discourse related to nickel mining in Raja Ampat. This study uses Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis theory, which includes texts, discursive practices, and socio-cultural practices. Prior to text analysis, the study first builds an understanding of the context of each news item. This study uses a qualitative approach with a critical paradigm. The analysis was conducted on five articles from Mongabay.co.id and five articles from Greeners.co published between June and October 2025, selected based on the keyword "Nickel in Raja Ampat." Data were obtained through news documentation and semi-structured interviews with the editors of both media outlets, readers, academics, mass media experts, and journalist professional organizations. The results of the study indicate that both media outlets highlight the ecological and social impacts of mining, and create counter-narratives to the dominant government narrative by using critical diction, such as "permanent destruction," "exploitation," "bringing suffering," and "destructive." Both Mongabay.co.id and Greeners.co also provide greater space for affected communities and environmental organizations to speak out. The difference between the two lies in their discursive strategies, where Mongabay.co.id emphasizes the ecological impacts based on scientific data or scientific-environmental discourse, while Greeners.co emphasizes the advocacy-environmental discourse aspect.
