Abstract

The practice of BxB (Boy x Boy) shipping among heterosexual women (fujoshi) in Indonesia presents a particular challenge for fans, as it takes place within a social environment shaped by heteronormative culture and religious values. This study aims to examine the motivations underlying Indonesian fujoshi’s engagement in BxB shipping and to explore how they construct meaning around the practice. This qualitative study adopts a constructivist paradigm and Alfred Schutz’s phenomenological approach. Informants were selected through purposive sampling and consisted of eight heterosexual women aged 18–34 years who had been consuming Boys Love (BL) content for at least one year and actively engaged in BxB shipping. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews using probing techniques, analyzed using the Colaizzi (1978) method, and validated through source triangulation and member checking. The findings indicate that fujoshi’s motivations include seeking entertainment and emotional comfort, an interest in romantic relationships perceived as appealing or ideal, the freedom to choose and interpret pairings, social connectedness with fellow fans, and imaginative and creative expression among some informants. Their engagement was shaped by previous experiences in K-pop fandoms, exposure to social media, peer influence, consumption of other media, and boredom with heterosexual romantic narratives. Intrinsic motivation was reflected in personal satisfaction derived from the shipping practice, while extrinsic elements emerged among some informants through responses, attention, or recognition from the fandom community. Social connectedness was also understood as fulfilling the need for relatedness. The practice was constructed as a fandom fantasy space negotiated through audience management, selective openness, levels of engagement, content boundaries, and a distinction between fandom interpretations and the realities of heteronormative social life.
