Abstract
The phenomenon of toxic parents remains a problem within family environments and can impact children’s psychological well-being. As a mass medium, film serves not only as entertainment but also as a vehicle for highlighting and depicting social realities in society, including toxic parenting patterns. This study aims to examine how the characteristics of toxic parents are pictured in Indonesian films from 2022 to 2025. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using qualitative content analysis. The research subjects consist of four Indonesian films Rumah Untuk Alie, Bolehkah Sekali Saja Ku Menangis, Mohon Doa Restu, and Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap. Data were collected through observation of scenes, dialogues, and other supporting elements indicating toxic parenting patterns. The results indicate that the most dominant forms of toxic parenting in the films are overcontrol, verbal abuse, and neglect of a child's emotional needs. These depictions reveal how toxic parenting can affect children’s mental health, sense of security, and emotional relationships with their parents. Indonesian films are also shown to be a medium capable of conveying meaningful portrayals of family realities and mental health issues in society.
