Abstract
This study aims to analyze the representation of cancel culture in the film Not Okay using Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach through three levels of meaning: denotation, connotation, and myth. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method. Data were collected through observation of scenes, dialogues, and visual elements presented in the film. The analysis was conducted through four stages: data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing/verification. The results show that cancel culture is represented through attempts to cancel the main character after she commits public deception. These forms of cancellation are manifested through public shaming, cyberbullying, social exclusion, stigmatization, job termination, social rejection, and deplatforming. At the mythological level, the findings reveal a transformation of traditional public shaming into digital public shaming, enabling social punishment to spread on a massive scale. In addition, virality is constructed as a new source of truth that shapes public perception. The relationship between celetoids and cancel culture demonstrates how popularity gained through digital media can rapidly turn into collective rejection. Furthermore, the study finds that cancel culture functions as a means of moral legitimation, allowing public figures and online communities to reinforce and assert socially accepted values within digital spaces.
