Abstract
A quarter-life crisis is a phenomenon experienced by individuals in early adulthood. One characteristic of a quarter-life crisis is a sense of anxiety caused by financial problems and career uncertainty. The purpose of this study is to identify and describe the dynamics of interpersonal communication among young adults experiencing a quarter-life crisis. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a phenomenological approach; this study collected data through semi-structured interviews and non-participant observation. Data analysis techniques included data reduction, data presentation, and preliminary conclusions, with data coding performed using NVivo 14. The research findings reveal diverse patterns of interpersonal communication dynamics consistent with Devito’s theory of openness, empathy, and support. Some participants exhibited open communication patterns with friends and family; however, the degree of openness in communication depended on who their conversation partner was, as some participants tended to be more reserved. The empathy they received took the form of verbal validation and emotional support from those closest to them. This support began with small gestures, such as being accompanied on a walk around town to ease their anxiety. Meanwhile, some interviewes did not receive empathy or support the communication they experienced did not meet their expectations, and they actually felt as though they were being compared to others. The results of interpersonal communication reveal dynamics that drive and transform. The factors contributing to a quarter-life crisis stem from internal sources including identity exploration, instability, and self-focus as well as external factors, such as family and friendship relationships, academic challenges, and work life.
