Abstract

The increasing demand for electrical energy and the urgency to reduce carbon emissions have driven the development of reliable and sustainable renewable energy generation systems. One potential solution supporting the energy transition is the integration of Photovoltaic (PV) systems with battery and hydrogen-based energy storage systems. This study aims to design and compare the technical and economic performance of three off-grid PV system configurations: PV-Battery, PV-H₂, and PV-H₂-Battery, under low-load and high-load scenarios using HOMER Pro software. The results show that the PV-H₂-Battery configuration provides the best technical performance, achieving the highest system efficiency of 65.03% under the high-load scenario, and enhances solar energy utilization by converting surplus energy into hydrogen. Meanwhile, the PV-Battery configuration requires the lowest initial investment of IDR 809 million and has the fastest payback period of 31 years. However, the PV-H₂-Battery configuration yields a lower life-cycle cost with a Net Present Cost (NPC) of IDR 1.69 billion and a Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) of IDR 8,680/kWh, making it more advantageous from a long-term cost perspective. These findings demonstrate a clear trade-off between technical and economic performance, indicating that the choice of system configuration must be tailored to the user's priority needs. The integration of hydrogen technology into off-grid PV systems has the potential to enhance reliability and renewable energy utilization as a more sustainable energy supply alternative for the future
