Abstract

The documentary film Arus yang Menghidupi: Dari Lumpur ke Logam (The Current That Sustains: From Mud to Metal) portrays the lives of metal panners working in the river behind the Cipayung Final Disposal Site (TPA Cipayung), Depok. Due to limited educational backgrounds and employment opportunities, metal panning has become their primary source of income despite the significant occupational health and safety risks caused by exposure to contaminated water and the absence of proper Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) standards. This documentary aims to depict the struggles of these workers in sustaining their livelihoods while raising public awareness of the challenging conditions faced by informal sector workers. The documentary adopts an observational approach with a three-act narrative structure. Data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews with metal panners, metal collectors, Cipayung landfill officers, and healthcare professionals, as well as literature studies to support the findings. By presenting real-life activities without staging or intervention, the film delivers an authentic representation of the workers’ daily lives. Through this documentary, audiences are invited to understand that the polluted river is not only a serious threat to the workers’ health but also the primary source of their livelihood, compelling them to return every day despite the risks. This film is expected to foster public empathy and serve as an educational medium highlighting the importance of occupational health and safety protection for informal sector workers.
