Abstract

This study examines women's experiences in using the first move feature on the Bumble dating application and its relation to the negotiation of gender roles in digital romantic interactions. The first move feature requires women to send the first message after a match occurs, creating a pattern of interaction that differs from traditional gender constructions, which generally position men as the active initiators of romantic approaches. This research employs a qualitative approach using Alfred Schutz’s phenomenological method to understand women’s subjective experiences in interpreting the feature. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with six female Bumble users. The findings reveal that Bumble usage is driven by various motives, including boredom, loneliness, recommendations from friends, the desire to build new connections, and the need for self-validation. Most participants initially felt confused and uncomfortable because they were unfamiliar with the first move system and still carried traditional understandings of gender roles. However, as they gained more experience using the application, they gradually adapted and came to view initiating conversations as a normal practice. The study also finds that the first move feature provides women with greater opportunities to actively select, evaluate, and determine potential partners with whom they wish to interact. Nevertheless, this shift in gender roles remains limited to the initial stage of interaction and reflects an ongoing negotiation between traditional gender constructions and new roles facilitated by digital technology.
