Abstract
Diarrhea is one of the five major infectious diseases with the potential to cause extraordinary outbreaks occurring in almost all provinces in Indonesia. Elderly patients experiencing diarrhea are at high risk of developing dehydration, which can progress to a significant loss of fluids and electrolytes, namely hypovolemia. Severe hypovolemia may lead to shock. This study aimed to obtain real experience in the application of nursing care with the main problem of hypovolemia in diarrhea cases at RSU Kota Tangerang Selatan, using a descriptive method with a case study approach on one managed patient, including the stages of assessment, data analysis, intervention, implementation, and nursing evaluation. The results of hypovolemia management interventions over 3 × 8 hours showed improvement in fluid status, with outcome criteria including improved blood pressure (125/90 mmHg), improved skin turgor (<2 seconds), increased pulse strength, improved pulse frequency (95 beats/minute), and reduced feelings of weakness. It was concluded that the nursing evaluation of hypovolemia management interventions proved effective in improving fluid status in patients with the primary problem of hypovolemia. The recommendation of this study is the need for strict monitoring of patients’ fluid status and optimal health education to improve the success of hypovolemia management in diarrhea cases.
