Abstract
Background: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by elevated blood glucose levels due to suboptimal insulin production or function. Limited understanding of the management of this disease in newly diagnosed patients can trigger blood glucose imbalances, making health education crucial to fostering patients' ability to manage their condition independently. Methods: This case study utilizes a nursing care approach encompassing assessment and evaluation. The subject was Mrs. Y (51 years old), diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, who was hospitalized in the inpatient ward of Pasar Minggu Regional Hospital for three days (March 2–4, 2026). Data were obtained through interviews, observation, physical examination, blood glucose monitoring, and medical records. Results: The assessment yielded four nursing diagnoses: unstable blood glucose levels, risk of decreased cardiac output, knowledge deficit, and nausea. After three 8-hour nursing interventions, two diagnoses—knowledge deficit and nausea—were completely resolved, while the other two—unstable blood glucose levels and risk of decreased cardiac output—were partially resolved. The results of the education showed an increase in patient knowledge from 70% to 100%, improved dietary compliance, and a decrease in blood glucose levels from 295 mg/dL to 195 mg/dL. Patients also demonstrated a more constructive attitude towards managing their illness. Conclusion: Health education has been shown to improve knowledge and help stabilize patient blood glucose levels, as evidenced by an increase in knowledge from 70% to 100%, improved dietary compliance, and a decrease in blood glucose from 295 mg/dL to 195 mg/dL. Suggestion: Nurses are expected to optimize the role of educators in providing comprehensive and sustainable care. Further research with a larger sample size is needed to produce more representative and broadly generalizable findings.
