Abstract

This study examines the role of leadership and primordial ties in determining the victory of Alfrenzi Panggarbesi in the 2019 and 2024 Legislative Elections for the South Sumatra Provincial DPRD Electoral District VIII. The phenomenon of this figure's election shows that local political dynamics are still greatly influenced by personal figures and the closeness of cultural identities within the community. Through a qualitative approach with case studies, this research explores how his background as a journalist, his social network, and his emotional closeness to the local community became stronger political capital than his party affiliation. The results show that Alfrenzi Panggarbesi's leadership served as the main source of legitimacy that was able to consistently mobilize voter loyalty, even when he changed parties. Meanwhile, primordial sentiments based on kinship, culture, and regional identity strengthened the community's acceptance of this figure. These findings confirm that electoral politics at the local level still relies on the power of figures and social bonds that have been built over the long term.
