Abstract
The rapid growth of the cosmetic market in Indonesia has created an opportunity for increased use of cosmetic brushes. The use of porcine hair as one of the raw materials for these brushes may pose halal concerns, particularly in Indonesia, where the majority of the population is Muslim. This study aimed to evaluate the halal status of cosmetic brushes sold in marketplaces in DKI Jakarta by detecting the presence of porcine hair using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy combined with chemometric analysis. An experimental study was conducted using purposive sampling on 17 cosmetic brush samples, with porcine hair as a positive control and bovine and caprine hair as negative controls. The samples were analyzed using FTIR-ATR followed by chemometric processing using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). FTIR analysis showed the presence of C-H (2850-2970 cm⁻¹) and C=O groups (1690–1760 cm-1) in all samples and comparison controls, as well as N-H groups (3300–3500 cm-1) only in the controls. The score plot from PCA showed that all samples were grouped separately from the porcine control. This study concludes that all brushes are indicated as halal, as shown by the distance on the score plot is not close.
