Abstract

The background of this scientific paper is that kidney stones are one of the urinary tract diseases with an increasing incidence rate and often require surgical intervention. This procedure carries a risk of surgical site infection, which can increase pain intensity, prolong hospitalization, and reduce the patient’s quality of life. Pain caused by surgical site infection is complex because it is influenced by the condition of the wound and wound care, therefore effective management is needed, including through non-pharmacological interventions. The purpose of this scientific paper is to determine the implementation of progressive muscle relaxation therapy in reducing pain levels in patients with post-kidney stone surgery wound infection. This study used a single case study design with a nursing care approach involving one patient at a type C hospital in South Tangerang City. The subject was selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through interviews, observation, physical examination, and medical record documentation. The intervention provided was progressive muscle relaxation therapy, with evaluation using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and monitoring of vital signs, including blood pressure and pulse rate. The results of this case study showed that the patient’s initial pain scale was 5 and gradually decreased to scale 1 after three days of intervention. The patient’s vital signs remained within normal limits and tended to be stable. In addition, the patient appeared calmer and was able to follow the relaxation technique well. The conclusion drawn from this case study is that progressive muscle relaxation therapy is proven to be effective as a non-pharmacological intervention in reducing pain and supporting the recovery process in patients with post-kidney stone surgery wound infection, therefore it can be recommended in nursing practice.
