Abstract
The Background of this case study was the incident of appendicitis as the most common cause of abdominal pain and surgical emergency worldwide. Post-appendectomy pain often hindered recovery and early mobilization. Deep breathing exercise was selected as a non-pharmacological intervention to control the pain. The objective of this case study was to identify the implementation of deep breathing exercise in nursing care for post-appendectomy patient experiencing acute pain at a type c hospital in Kota Tangerang Selatan. Single descriptive case study using a purposive sampling technique was the method used in this case study. Data were obtained through interviews, observations, physical examinations, and medical record documentation. Deep breathing exercises were implemented for 10–15 minutes, twice a day, morning and afternoon, for three consecutive days. Pain levels were evaluated using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) instrument. Throughout the process, ethical principles including informed consent, beneficence, non-maleficence, veracity, and confidentiality were strictly applied. As the result of this case study were evaluation showed that after performing the exercises, the patient’s pain levels decreased from level of 7 to level of 2. Facial grimacing and anxiety diminished, while pain management skills improved. Early mobilization advanced as a direct result of the reduced pain level. The conclusion that can be drawn from this case study is that the implementation of deep breathing exercises can reduce pain levels in post-appendectomy patients from severe pain to mild and non-disturbing pain, and can help support the post-appendectomy recovery process. Deep breathing exercise therapy is recommended as one of the non-pharmacological interventions in managing pain in post-appendectomy patient.
