Abstract

Aluminum alloy 6061‑T6 is widely used in automotive and aerospace industries due to its favorable mechanical properties, yet its impact toughness remains a critical concern. This study aims to analyze the absorbed energy of aluminum alloy 6061‑T6 in Charpy impact testing using V‑notch and U‑notch specimens and to compare the fracture mechanisms through macro and micro observations as well as numerical simulation based on Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The results show that V‑notch specimens absorb more energy than U‑notch specimens, exhibiting ductile fracture characterized by small and dense dimples, while U‑notch specimens absorb less energy with larger and sparse dimples indicating faster crack opening. FEA simulations support the experimental findings by showing a wider distribution of equivalent stress (von Mises stress) in V‑notch and a narrower stress zone in U‑notch. Overall, this study confirms that notch geometry significantly influences the absorbed energy and fracture mechanism of aluminum alloy 6061‑T6.
