Abstract

Obesity is a global health problem that can affect various aspects, including increased oxidative stress and neuroinflammation in the brain. One important marker of oxidative stress is a decrease in the enzyme Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), which functions to maintain cellular redox balance and protect nerve cells from damage caused by free radicals. A reduction in SOD levels in obesity conditions is known to trigger activation of hypothalamic glial cells, leading to prolonged neural inflammation. Moringa oleifera, or the moringa plant, is known to contain phytochemicals with high antioxidant activity; however, research on the effects of its fruit extract on antioxidant parameters and neuroinflammation in obesity is still limited. The aim of this study is to analyze the effects of administering Moringa oleifera fruit extract on SOD levels and the neuroinflammatory profile of hypothalamic glial cells in obese Wistar rats. The method used was a pure experiment with a post-test only control group design involving four groups of male Wistar rats, consisting of a normal control, an obese control, and two treatment groups receiving Moringa oleifera fruit extract at different doses for four weeks. The results of the study showed that administering Moringa oleifera fruit extract significantly increased SOD levels compared to the obese control group without therapy. Histologically, improvements were observed in the hypothalamic glial cells, including reduced gliosis and microglial activation in the treatment groups. These findings indicate that Moringa oleifera fruit extract has antioxidant and neuroprotective effects that can suppress neuroinflammation caused by obesity. This study contributes academically to the development of natural-based therapies for obesity and opens opportunities for the use of moringa fruit as a potential phytotherapeutic agent.
