Abstract
Kidney disease ranks among the top ten causes of death worldwide, according to WHO data in 2023. Management of chronic kidney disease (CKD) aims to preserve remaining kidney function, reduce symptoms, and improve quality of life. In end stage CKD, patients require renal replacement therapy such as hemodialysis. During this procedure, vascular access serves as the main pathway for blood exchange between the body and the dialysis machine. The arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is the most recommended access type because it is durable, safe, and has a low risk of infection. A common complaint during hemodialysis is pain during AVF cannulation. To reduce this, distraction therapy using a stress ball can be applied as a non pharmacological method. This therapy diverts the patient’s attention from pain to the physical act of squeezing the ball, helping decrease pain perception. The intervention was given six times to the managed patient and four times to the comparison patient. Pain levels were assessed using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), with skors ranging from 3–7 and 4–8, respectively. It can be concluded that stress ball distraction therapy is effective, safe, simple, and economical in reducing pain during AVF needle insertion in hemodialysis patients.
