Abstract
ANALYSIS OF NURSING CARE FOR ISCHEMIC STROKE WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF BILATERAL UPPER EXTREMITY EXERCISE (BUEE) TO IMPROVE UPPER EXTREMITY MOTOR FUNCTION Meuthia Deva Amalia Abstract Introduction: Stroke remains one of the leading causes of mortality and disability worldwide, with hemiparesis being a common complication that significantly impairs upper extremity function. Bilateral Upper Extremity Exercise (BUEE) is a nursing intervention designed to enhance neuroplasticity and motor recovery through the simultaneous movement of both arms. Methods: This case study describes the implementation of BUEE in two ischemic stroke patients with hemiparesis who were admitted to a stroke unit. The intervention was administered twice daily for three consecutive days. Each 15-minute session consisted of active or assisted bilateral movements involving the shoulders, elbows, wrists, and fingers. Motor function was assessed using the Fugl-Meyer Assessment for Upper Extremity (FMA-UE) before and after the intervention. Results: Both patients demonstrated notable improvements in upper extremity motor performance. Mrs. S’s FMA-UE score increased from 34 to 46, while Mrs. H’s score increased from 43 to 57. Improvements in muscle strength, coordination, and movement control were observed, and both patients tolerated the intervention well without adverse effects. Discussion/Suggestion: These findings indicate that BUEE is a safe, effective, and practical intervention for improving upper extremity motor function in patients with ischemic stroke. This technique can be integrated into routine nursing rehabilitation to support neuroplasticity, prevent immobility-related complications, and enhance patient independence. Keywords: Bilateral Upper Extremity Exercise, Hemiparesis, Ischemic Stroke, Motor Recovery, Nursing Intervention.
