Abstract
Bullying is a recurring theme frequently depicted in films, including anime. This study aims to analyze the narrative of bullying in the anime film A Silent Voice (2016) through the lens of the kishotenketsu structure. By employing narrative analysis as the research method and adopting the four-part kishotenketsu structure ki (introduction), sho (development), ten (climax/twist), and ketsu (conclusion) this study explores how bullying is narratively constructed. The findings reveal that the film comprises four narrative substructures, each consisting of either complete or partial applications of the kishotenketsu framework. Collectively, these substructures construct a narrative that portrays bullying as a prolonged internal conflict for both perpetrator and victim, as a collective rather than individual conflict, and as a conflict that can be unraveled, resolved, and healed. Character development progresses at each narrative stage, encompassing shifts in mindset, attitudes toward self and others, and transformations in role where both perpetrators and victims evolve into whole individuals who come to terms with their past.
