Abstract

The rising number of divorce cases in Jakarta has resulted in more mothers taking on dual roles as both breadwinners and primary caregivers. This condition creates emotional, social, and economic challenges that affect the quality of communication between single mothers and their children after divorce. Emotional closeness becomes a crucial aspect in maintaining children's psychological stability, yet it is often hindered by limited time, work demands, and the mental burden experienced by single mothers. This study aims to understand how communication patterns are formed and practiced by single mothers to maintain emotional closeness with their children, particularly within the context of urban life in Jakarta. This research employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to explore the subjective experiences of single mothers in depth. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and documentation with several single mothers in Jakarta raising children after divorce. The findings indicate that single mothers apply various communication patterns, including empathetic and effective communication, emotional openness, nonverbal communication, two-way interaction, and involvement in shared activities. These patterns create a sense of safety, trust, and emotional closeness that support children in adapting to changes in family structure. The study also reveals that despite the dual burdens they face, communication remains the primary strategy used by single mothers to maintain warmth in relationships and emotional stability at home.
