Abstract
Rising carbon emissions pose a major challenge to sustainable development, particularly in emerging economies such as Indonesia. This study analyzes the effects of economic growth, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), and renewable energy on carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions in Indonesia using annual time-series data from 1970-2023 obtained from the World Bank and Our World in Data. An Error Correction Model (ECM) with linear and quadratic specifications is employed to examine short-run and long-run relationships. The results show that economic growth has a positive and significant effect on CO₂ emissions in the short run. In the long run, GDP positively affects emissions, while GDP squared has a negative and significant effect, confirming the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis. FDI is insignificant in the short run but has a negative and significant impact in the long run, supporting the Pollution Halo Hypothesis. Renewable energy reduces emissions only in the long run under the linear model, while remaining insignificant in the short run and quadratic specification. Overall, economic growth initially increases emissions, whereas FDI and renewable energy contribute to emission reduction in the long run.
