Abstract
Emotionally neglectful parenting is characterized by limited parental emotional responsiveness and validation toward children, despite parents being physically present. This condition often occurs through family communication patterns that lack emotional openness. This study aims to examine family communication patterns within the context of emotionally neglectful parenting. This study employs a qualitative approach using a phenomenological method. The participants consist of six parent-child dyads aged 18-25 years selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and photo elicitation, and analyzed using data coding. The findings indicate that most families demonstrate low conversation orientation and high conformity orientation. Family communication tends to be functional, infrequent, and lacks emotional depth. Children often experience limited emotional validation, which reduces self-disclosure. This combination forms a protective communication pattern, where parents dominate decision-making and children are expected to comply. The study shows that emotionally neglectful parenting is embedded in everyday family communication patterns that are emotionally unresponsive.
