Abstract
This study aims to analyze the effect of preheating temperature variation on the development of distortion and changes in macrostructure during the Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW) process of SS400 steel. The research was conducted experimentally using three preheating temperature variations, namely without preheating (0°C), 200°C, and 300°C, with a welding current of 66 A and a constant welding speed. Distortion was measured using a dial indicator to detect vertical deformation after welding, while macrostructure observations were carried out using a metallographic microscope on the weld metal, heat-affected zone (HAZ), and base metal. The results indicate that the higher the preheating temperature, the smaller the vertical distortion produced, with average values of 2.51 mm at 0°C, 1.69 mm at 200°C, and 1.56 mm at 300°C. This reduction is associated with a more uniform heat distribution and slower cooling rate, which helps reduce residual stresses in the welded area. macrostructure observations were carried out to examine the visual appearance in the weld zone, HAZ, and base metal. The results show that increasing the preheating temperature leads to a smoother visual appearance and more gradual transitions between zones, particularly under the 300°C condition. These visual changes reflect a more stable cooling process, resulting in less noticeable structural differences compared to specimens without preheating.
