Abstract

This study aims to analyze the strategy behind the appointment of Kaesang Pangarep as Chairman of the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI) and its impact on the party's vote share in the 2024 General Election. Kaesang, a public figure and son of President Joko Widodo, was appointed as party chairman only two days after officially becoming a PSI member. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods and in-depth interviews involving five sources, including political analysts, academics, and PSI insiders. The findings show that Kaesang’s appointment increased PSI’s visibility in public discourse and social media, particularly among young voters. However, the strategy did not significantly raise the party’s vote share to surpass the parliamentary threshold. The study also reveals that although Kaesang possesses symbolic, social, economic, and moral capital, the strategy is viewed as overly symbolic and lacking in structural consolidation. This research recommends that PSI should integrate figure-based strategies with institutional strengthening and a consistent ideological narrative in the future.
