Abstract
The 2022 Kanjuruhan tragedy marked a critical turning point in Indonesian football, triggering a significant decline in international trust, particularly from FIFA. This study aims to analyze Indonesia’s sports diplomacy strategies especially through the role of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) in restoring the nation’s football image post-tragedy. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews and literature review. The findings reveal that Indonesia adopted a multi-track sports diplomacy approach by hosting international tournaments such as the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2023, initiating exchange programs with advanced football federations, and appointing international athletes as sports ambassadors. Furthermore, social assistance programs for victims and the construction of FIFA-standard stadium infrastructure demonstrate Indonesia’s commitment to reforming its football ecosystem. These diplomacy strategies proved effective as soft power tools in rebuilding reputation, strengthening international networks, and regaining global public trust. The study emphasizes the importance of synergy among government institutions, sports federations, and civil society in developing sustainable and globally competitive sports diplomacy.
