Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the struggle by waria in Teater Manekin to achieve ideal citizenship, namely political recognition through the arts. As a “sexual minority”, waria in Teater Manekin still experience various forms of discrimination and injustice, the existence of waria is considered not in accordance with existing national norms, the chosen gender identity is considered a sin. Waria at the Teater Manekin have been the target of slander and bullying by the community directly, public spaces do not provide a sense of security for waria, Waria at the Teater Manekin also face problems of access to formal employment. When working in non formal jobs, waria still have to experience exploitation from their employers, discrimination from coworkers, and unpaid rights. This study aims to find out the movement efforts made by waria in Teater Manekin by using theater arts in fulfilling the ideal citizenship aspect, namely the politics of recognition. This Study uses a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach, while based on its objectives this research is a type of description. The results of this study show that waria have a desire to be socially recognized, waria are also not included in the stratification of citizenship popularized by Stokke. The claim of citizenship to get recognition shown by waria in Teater Manekin through the art stage is identified as a social non-movement. Following the work of Asef Bayat, the waria in Teater Manekin movement is a collective action of non-collective actors, a movement that is carried out quietly and simply, without being guided by ideology or standardized leadership, not doing political protests or fighting in the formal institutional arena, but doing direct practice with the theater art stage.
